Golf Mental Toughness

Golf punishes overthinking more than almost any other sport. Mental training helps you trust your swing again, especially on the green.

How it shows up

Golf is uniquely mental: there’s no defender rushing you, no clock, just you, the ball, and however much time your mind has to second-guess the shot. Mental toughness issues in golf often show up as putting yips, where a golfer’s grip suddenly feels different and their confidence on short putts disappears, or as a general uncertainty that creeps into a round after one or two bad holes and doesn’t let go.

That uncertainty compounds. A missed putt leads to doubt on the next one, which leads to a tense grip, which leads to another miss, even though the physical skill hasn’t gone anywhere.

How hypnotherapy helps

Pattie Freeman is a NESTA-certified Sports Mind Coach who works with athletes across a range of sports, including golf, on exactly this kind of performance interference. Sports Mental Training uses hypnosis and visualization to work with the subconscious mind directly, rebuilding trust in your swing and your putting stroke instead of letting doubt take over mid-round.

The work targets the mental loop of doubt-tension-miss-more doubt, so you can play a shot on its own merits instead of carrying the last one with you.

What a session looks like

Every new client starts with a free 20-minute consultation, in person at Pattie’s Scottsdale office or by phone or Zoom, to talk through where mental toughness is breaking down in your game. From there, sessions run $150 each.

Common questions

Is this specifically for the putting yips, or general mental game too? Both. Sessions are customized to whatever part of your game is affected, whether that’s putting, driving under pressure, or overall focus through 18 holes.

Will this change my swing mechanics? No. The goal is to clear the mental interference so your existing swing and stroke can execute the way they’re capable of.

How many sessions does this typically take? It varies, but many golfers notice a shift in confidence within a short series of sessions.
