Parts Therapy / IFS

The part of you that wants to change and the part that resists it aren't enemies, they're both trying to protect you. Parts Therapy helps them work together.

How it shows up

Many clients describe feeling internally conflicted: one part of them wants to quit smoking, lose weight, or leave a bad pattern behind, while another part keeps pulling them back toward the old behavior. That tug-of-war can feel confusing or even like a personal failing, “why can’t I just stick to what I know is right,” when really it’s a normal internal conflict between different parts of the mind, each with its own protective role.

How hypnotherapy helps

Parts Therapy, closely related to Internal Family Systems (IFS), works from the idea that the mind is made up of different “parts,” each formed to protect you in some way, even when their current behavior isn’t serving you anymore. Pattie Freeman, a Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, uses hypnosis to access these parts directly and help them communicate and cooperate, rather than fighting for control.

Instead of trying to force the resistant part into silence, the work aims to understand what it’s protecting you from and find a way to meet that need differently, so the conflict resolves rather than just getting suppressed.

What a session looks like

Every new client starts with a free 20-minute consultation, in person at Pattie’s Scottsdale office or by phone or Zoom, to talk through the internal conflict you’re experiencing. From there, sessions run $150 each.

Common questions

Is this the same as having multiple personalities? No. Parts work describes normal aspects of one integrated mind, not separate identities. It’s a common and well-established therapeutic framework.

What kinds of issues does Parts Therapy address? It’s often used for internal conflict around habits, self-sabotage, and decisions where part of you wants one thing and another part resists.

How is this different from standard hypnotherapy? Parts Therapy uses hypnosis as a tool to access and work with these internal parts specifically, rather than general suggestion-based hypnosis.
